On the 1st of December, the ENVISION project was launched. The project aims to develop an intelligent plug-and-play digital tool for real-time surveillance of COVID-19 patients and smart decision-making in Intensive Care Units (ICU).
Over the past months, more than 60m people have been diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2, out of which more than 18m were in Europe. Among infected people, some have suffered from a severe form of the virus and have needed to receive treatments in ICUs. As most countries were not prepared for this, and as the disease is still not well-known, this has led to high mortality rates with an estimate of 1.5m deaths globally and almost 335 000 in Europe.
The ENVISION project is part of Horizon 2020 societal challenges, which includes health, demographic change and well-being. The objective of this societal challenge is to improve the lifelong health and well-being of citizens, decrease the mortality rate and gain more insights into the virus by increasing the surveillance of COVID-19 patients.
The project is expected to run until the end of July 2022 and has 18 participants as well as one coordinator. The digital tool, when available, will be validated and demonstrated in 14 hospitals across Europe.
The Advanced Technology for Industry (ATI) project has recently published the Sectoral Watch on Technological trends in the medical devices industry and related healthcare. This report underlines the transformation of the healthcare industry with digital technologies, artificial intelligence, connected devices and data, enabling the development of new solutions.
