Description
BIBA is the oldest affiliated institute of the University of Bremen. Internationally, it is ranked amongst one of the most renowned research institutions in Germany. Altogether 150 people work in the BIBA research divisions “Intelligent Production and Logistics Systems” (IPS) and “ICT Applications for Production” (IKAP) as well as in the associated departments in the faculty of Production Engineering of the University of Bremen. BIBA is engaged in basic research, applied research, contract research as well as national and international research associations. In its work, the institute combines the main areas of production and logistics and focuses on the processes as well as on the products.

The Industry 4.0 Competence and Transfer Centre at BIBA offers companies the opportunity to experience, develop, test and evaluate new technologies for production and logistics. It also has diverse laboratory facilities, in which different detailed aspects of “Industry 4.0” are developed and transferred into practice. The Serious Gaming Lab (https://www.biba-gaminglab.com/en) helps to develop competences with technology-assisted games. The Computer Vision Lab deals with image processing and artificial intelligence for the human-machine interaction, for example. The LogDynamics Lab (http://www.logdynamics.de/lab.html?&L=1) is a university-wide application centre for technologies in logistics. Last but not least, in the IoT FabLab (http://www.iotfablab.eu) smart and internet-connected products are being developed and tested.

With the integrative view on the research fields production and logistics as well as its comprehensive experience and deep understanding of products, processes, collaborative company networks and complex, dynamic systems the BIBA institute has generated numerous and diverse contributions to the progresses of digitalisation for almost 20 years. For example, it initiated the collaborative research centre “Autonomous Cooperating Logistics Processes“ (CRC 637). Beyond basic research originated in this CRC the BIBA scientists contribute significantly to developments in the area of “Industry 4.0” and supports SMEs in this subject. BIBA is partner of Germany’s first SME-targeted 4.0 competence centre “Mit uns digital! Das Zentrum für Niedersachsen und Bremen“ and offers SMEs courses and demonstrations for specific problems and topics. In the BIBA Labs (IoT FabLab, Vision Lab, Gaming Lab) the SMEs have the opportunity to test innovative technologies before implementing them in their business processes.
