Description

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. BarcelonaTech (UPC) is among the largest Spanish technical universities, with more than 2.000 researchers and 30.000 students, covering research in the main engineering field. The university is currently involved in more than 100 European projects, acting as a coordinator in more than 20.

The CD6 is a technological innovation center located at the Terrassa Campus, which operates in the field of Optics and Photonics Engineering. The activity of CD6 is aimed at creating value through innovation, understanding R+D as a part of the value chain. The core mission is to create new knowledge through applied research programs and support industry making it reach the market as new products or new processes.

Over 40 people with complementary expertise (Optics, Electronics, Mechanical and Software) work at CD6. This multidisciplinary combination is necessary to develop applications with a short time-to-market. The research results achieved at CD6 have led to the creation of several spin-off companies that manufacture and market new products in different sectors.

The portfolio of technologies currently managed by CD6 includes the following:

  • Design of optical systems and sensors
  • Development of instrumentation
  • Optical Metrology
  • Biomedical Instrumentation
  • Optical Sensors for Smart Cities
  • Energy efficient illumination systems
  • Optical techniques for non-destructive testing (NDT)
  • Spectral and Color Technologies

In the last 5 years, CD6 has managed over 50 projects for nearly 30 customers with a total budget close to € 6M.

CD6 provides R+D and innovation support to companies Worldwide and from wide range of industry sectors as, in example, automotive, consumer electronics and multimedia, biomedical instrumentation and institutions or research centers, among others.

The close contact with industries along the 20 years of CD6 history, has turned entrepreneurship into an essential part of CD6 culture. The Centre has promoted the incorporation of several spin-off companies based on research results. This strategy has led to the creation of an entrepreneurial environment around CD6 hosting up to 8 spin-off companies along with 4 subsidiary companies that are based on technology developed at CD6. In addition, 3 other start-up companies have been created by PhD students or former team members of CD6 that also integrate this entrepreneurial environment.

CD6 is member of several technology platforms, holds a position as stakeholder in Photonics21, member of the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC), founder of the Southern European Cluster in Photonics and Optics (SECPhO) along with other six private companies and holds the TECNIO and ISO9001 accreditations.

Equipment

There are three types of laboratories and workshops at CD6:

1.- Workshops. Our mechanics and electronics workshops, which have a total surface area of 110 m2, feature state-of-the-art equipment used in designing and developing the projects carried out at the Centre. Our mechanics workshop has machine tools and measuring instruments that can be used for all sorts of work. Our electronics workshop has tools used to develop various types of 8- and 16-bit microcontrollers. It also has tools for developing programmable logic devices such as CPLDs and FPGAs.

2.- Prototype room. This 60-m2 space is used for integrating, adjusting and testing the devices designed and built at the Centre prior to customer delivery. It is located next to the workshops and holds all of the equipment required for full operation.

3.- Design and development laboratories. The five laboratories, whose total surface area is 310 m2, are used for designing applications, carrying out measurements and performing tests related to the Centre’s main research lines, which are the following:

  • Instrument development.
  • Design and simulation of optical systems.
  • Surface, optical, radiometric, photometric and color metrology.
  • Biophotonics applications in vision.

Services

Services provided by CD6 are industry oriented. The services range from applied R+D projects to develop photonic solutions to simple measurements using the existing equipment. The center is offering the following standard services:

  • Technology diagnose
  • Feasibility studies
  • R+D projects
  • Measurement services with the available equipment
  • Product standards validation
  • State-of-the-art studies
  • Instrument calibration
  • Specific training courses
  • Public R+D funding assessment, consortium creation and proposal preparation support.

Also, the center is open to other collaboration schemes that may be suitable to target specific industry needs.
