Description

Created in 1993, CCP is a public R&D center. It was created as an instrument for improving companies in the plastics sector through advice, training and carrying out technology transfer projects, mainly to local and European SMEs.

CCP exist out of an experienced team of researchers belonging to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) (recognized by the Generalita de Catalunya) e-PLASCOM: “Eco-friendly plastic and composites, all belonging to the UPC. In this way, the action lines of the CCP focus on reducing the environmental impact of plastic products, using recycled raw material or polymers from biomass, as well as the use of advanced and sustainable industrial manufacturing processes.

All research activities are articulated in three main axes, always thinking about the final processing-structure-performance relationship: a) Advanced materials (biopolymers and bioplastics); b) Design, processing and service life (structural integrity); and c) Recovery and "upcycling" of plastic waste.  Covering the levels of technology maturity from conception and application of formulated technology (TRL-3) to the validation of concepts in simulated and real environments (TRL-7).

CCP is currently integrated into the following knowledge networks:

TECNIO: Network of Catalonian Technological developers  (Acciò – Generalitat de Catalunya) http://www.accio.gencat.cat/en/serveis/innovacio/tecnologia-i-rd-per-a-empresa/tecnio/index.html)

XaRFA: “Xarxa de referència d'R+D+I en Fabricació Additiva” (Reference network in Additive Manufacturing)  (AGAUR – Generalitat de Catalunya)

REVAMAPLA: Reciclado y valorización de materiales plásticos. Incorporación de subproductos industriales y postconsumo ( Recycling and valorization of plastic materials. Incorporation of industrial and post-consumer by-products) (Spanish Science and Innovation Ministry – State Agency for research (AEI): Ref:  RED2022-134806-T)

Red Iberoamericana para el Diseño y manufactura de productos plásticos por inyección y manufactura digital con perspectivas sostenibles (en evaluación) -   Ibero-American Network for the Design and manufacture of plastic products by injection and digital manufacturing with sustainable perspectives (under evaluation). (CYTED – Mexico).

Equipment

CCP facilities are distributed in 6 laboratories or workshops:

  • Materials processing: 3 injection molding machines with different clamping forces (one of them equipped with the MuCELL® physical microfoaming system), blown film extrusion pilot line, 3-layer co-extrusion and calendering system, Twin screw extrudir with the capacity to carry out reactive extrusion, drier hopper and complementary peripherals, FFF equipment from pellets.
  • Compounding laboratory: internal mixer (50cm3/batch), compression molding press.
  • Thermal behavior laboratory: DSC, DMA, RDA, TGA, capillary rheometer, MFI/MVR meters, HDT/VICAT.
  • Mechanical testing laboratory: 3 universal testing machines (one of them servo-hydraulic), 3D video extensometer with image correlation sofware, pendulum impact equipment (in its different geometries) and impact by weight drop, both high and low energy, all of them instrumented.
  • Fire laboratory: cone calorimetry and UL tests

Detailed information about the models and specifications of the equipmets can be found in our web site (https://www.upc.edu/ccp/en/Facilities)

Services

Our services include:

  • R&D&I projects through agreements with industries in sectors such as: packaging, medicine, electronics, construction, automotive and aeronautics. Most of them are related to product development and use of advanced processing techniques.
  • Consultancies regarding the selection of materials, optimization of the design of parts and failure analysis.
  • Manufacturing tools tests and “processability windows” determination in both extrusion and injection molding.
  • Pilot plant scale production.
  • Technical industrial tests following current standards for verification and validation.
  • Theoretical-practical courses in technology of plastic materials, processing and evaluation of mechanical performance, both "in company" and in our facilities adapted to the needs of the company and profile of attendees.
