Description

National Institute of Chemistry, Ljubljana, Slovenia (NIC), is a leading Slovenian research institution in the field of chemistry and related disciplines. Basic and applied research are oriented towards fields which are of long-term importance to both Slovenia and the world: biotechnology, environmental protection, structural and theoretical chemistry, analytical chemistry, materials research, and chemical engineering, through which the institute is in line with the needs of the domestic chemical, pharmaceutical, tire, and food industries. The work of the Institute is also in line with the priority thematic areas of the EU Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020. NIC has 300 employees of which around 266 carry out research work in 14 laboratories and two infrastructure centres; 136 of these have doctorates of science degrees. The Institute was the first research institution in Slovenia to obtain ISO 9001 standards in December 2003 with the goal of improving the conditions, as well as organization and effectiveness, of its work.

Industry is an important partner to the Institute in endeavors to develop of new technologies and products. There are a number of Slovenian companies with whom the Institute has entered into close long-term cooperation, as well as a number of well-regarded foreign companies. In collaboration with the best research organisations and companies in Europe, we are currently active in  in 12 projects funded by Horizon 2020: ADREM, TOLLerant, MefCO2, HELIS, PLOTINA, NextBioPharm, NanoRestart.In 3, Fresme, LIRichFCC, Obelics, LightDyNAmics,. However, there are many more national and world-wide projects that are going on at the Institute in the present. In addition, in the last three years, we submitted more than 40 patent applications, which positions NIC at the top of Slovene organisations applying for patents.

Equipment

NIC owns some pieces of equipment that are unique for the Slovene research area and in the “new member states” area:

  • AR STEM – state of the art atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscope

  • Karl Zeiss Supra 35 VP Electronic Microscope with EDX analysis-

  • a high resolution powder x-ray diffractometer,

  • a 800, 600, 400 MHz NMR spectrometer
