TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION is a private, independent, non profit applied research center of international excellence. Legally a Foundation, Tecnalia is the leading private and independent research and technology organisation in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, employing 1,401 people (288 PhDs) and with income of 128 Million € in 2022.
The whole team at TECNALIA has one GOAL: to Transform Research into Prosperity to improve people’s quality of life by means of innovation and technological development addressed to Energy Transition, Digital Transformation, Urban Ecosystems, Sustainable Mobility, Personalised Health and Intelligent Manufacturing. TECNALIA has been granted 851 patents (within 205 families) and promoted more than 30 spin-off companies.
TECNALIA is a key agent in the ERA - European Research Area. TECNALIA actively participates in the governing bodies of several European R&I Partnerships, ETPs, etc (ADRA, Process4Planet, EERA, several EIT KICs …). Within the H2020 Framework Programme TECNALIA participates in 353 projects, coordinating 73 of them (EC data), not counting EIT KIC projects. Regarding Horizon Europe, up to the end of 2022, TECNALIA participates in 94 projects coordinating 16 of them. TECNALIA is a member of EARTO and of EUROTECH, linking together the most important RTOs in Europe.
In TECNALIA’s Energy Transition we develop solutions for a competitive generation of renewable energy and for CO2-free mobility. Our experience in smart networks, energy storage (including hydrogen), digital technologies, energy efficiency, and advanced materials supports their own deployment. We support the industry decarbonisation, and the planning/design of energy-efficient, sustainable, comfortable, and resilient urban environments.
Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 involves the in-depth decarbonisation of energy with a 100% renewable electric system. This unprecedented challenge requires massive inclusion of renewable energies, an increase in energy efficiency in buildings, cities, and the industry, the electrification of transport, the replacement of fossil fuels with green energy, and the deployment of smart networks by facilitating advanced management of energy generation, storage, and distribution.
In this context, we collaborate with the industry and institutions to develop low-carbon energy solutions by integrating the ideal technologies required for each application. We seek to align business transformation with the change of the energy model by developing new technology-based opportunities created in areas such as:
